Well, I've tried recording video with my 5D MkII and it isn't as easy as I'd hoped, but it's hard to argue with the quality of the video when I managed to get it right! (see my first efforts on uTube ;-)
I was extremely lucky and got a place on an HDSLR training course with HDSLR Cinema Ireland, which opened my eyes to many of the aspects of video recording I hadn't known about, even getting a chance to be the sound-man for an interview we set up and filmed as part of the course.
One thing that was said again and again was to use the 'Technicolor CineStyle' Picture Style for my 5D MkII, which first makes everything look dull and washed out ... but really means that the camera can record better colours and details, especially in challenging light. The problem for me was that it meant extra processing to get the colour intensities back in the edit. As I use Windows on all of my machines, and can't justify spending close to a grand on a video editor that would take the plug-ins necessary to make the correct adjustments, this was a no-no for me - until I discovered 5DtoRGB, a (currently) free transcoder that also will adjust the gamma back from CineStyle!
So, now I'm back in business with CineStyle, while also ending up with video that is not such a burden on my NLE. The one issue I had with 5DtoRGB was that it would only work on 1 file at a time, so I wrote a batch file and created a link to it from my 'sendto' folder, and now all I have to do is select the .mov files in Explorer and choose 'send to' and my batch file, and then it all happens auto-magically!
With 6 cores on my PC, I also found that I could start multiple sessions side-by-side to use up all of the cores, with little hit to the individual streams ... but, as they say, your mileage may vary!
If you want, you can try a copy of the batch file, and let me know how you get on... let me know!
(Just go to the page I set up for it)
All the best,
Gary
